Government of SP renews partnership with Japanese cooperation agency

Agreement with JICA will be valid for five years, in the areas of agriculture, environmental management, infrastructure, health and medicine

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas signed this Tuesday (14th) a protocol of intentions to renew the partnership between the Government of São Paulo and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The act happened at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.

“I am very happy to sign the partnership with JICA, which has been so important for São Paulo and for Brazil. This cooperation is fundamental for the transfer of knowledge it represents, we are strengthened and the State has gained a lot from this exchange. Japan has a lot to teach and I’m sure it will be a very successful partnership”, said Governor Tarcísio de Freitas.

The partnership will be valid for five years and consists of mutual technical and financial collaboration. It will encompass the areas of agriculture, environmental management (basic sanitation, energy and measures against climate change), infrastructure, health and medicine, prevention of natural disasters and public safety.

“We have very strong ties with Japan, there are almost three decades of cooperation in several areas and that are fundamental for the economic development of the State of São Paulo”, highlighted the Secretary of International Business, Lucas Ferraz.

The senior vice president of JICA, Katsura Miyazaki, in turn, spoke about the relevance of the State of São Paulo, highlighting that the cooperation signed by JICA, especially in Latin America, is signed with national governments. She also highlighted the commitment of the people of São Paulo to put partnerships into effect.

“In addition to the economic relevance, we are aware of the commitment of the Government of São Paulo to develop medium and long-term projects. It is a great pleasure to sign this agreement and we look forward to expanding to more and more areas in the future,” said JICA Senior Vice President Katsura Miyazaki.

She was accompanied by the Agency’s chief representative, Masayuki Eguchi; the Consul General of Japan in São Paulo, Ryosuke Kuwana; JICA Senior Deputy Director Chiaki Takabatake; the JICA coordinator for South America, Karen Hagwara; the representative of the JICA office in Brazil, Ryunosuke Kataoka; and the training assistant for the Nikkei community at the JICA office in Brazil, Erina Aizawa.

On the São Paulo side, the Secretary for the Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, Natália Resende; the Secretary of Health, Eleuses Paiva; Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Antônio Junqueira; the Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite; and the chief secretary of the Casa Militar and coordinator of Civil Defense, Colonel Hengeel Ricardo Pereira.

Examples

The State of São Paulo and Japan have a tradition of working together with JICA. The first partnership was sealed 23 years ago and the “Community Police” project is considered a model for the country, with experience shared with other Brazilian states.

The Agency also acted in the lowering of the Tietê river channel to prevent overflows, with financing of US$ 494 million, and in Sabesp’s actions in Represa Billings and Baixada Santista, with loans of US$ 75 million and US$ 500 million, respectively. , among other initiatives.
