The Consulate of Chile in Brazil became an International Observer of the São Paulo Environmental Agreement, which encourages the voluntary adherence of companies, associations and public bodies to assume commitments aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. The formalization of the agreement was signed this Monday (7) through the Secretariat of International Relations.

The consul general of Chile, Juan Carlos Salazar-Álvares, participated in the act together with the director-president of Cetesb (Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo), Patrícia Iglecias, and the advisor to the office of the Secretariat for International Relations, Bruno Berkiensztat, who represented Secretary Julio Serson.

“The São Paulo Environmental Agreement is a synthesis of this management by the State Government, which increasingly seeks to make São Paulo an international sustainability hub,” said Berkiensztat.

“Created along the lines of the Paris Agreement, the Environmental Agreement places São Paulo even more in evidence for the international community, which has the preservation of the environment as a focal point. I believe that with the adherence of Observers, the Agreement gains even more credibility and strength, motivating more companies and partners to take part”, he added.

The São Paulo Environmental Agreement was released in 2019 by the State Government, through the Secretariats for International Relations and Infrastructure and the Environment, and conceived and technically coordinated by Cetesb. The initiative aims to encourage the voluntary adherence of companies, associations representing productive sectors and São Paulo municipalities so that they can assume commitments to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, as recommended by the Paris Agreement.

Initially with 55 members, the Environmental Agreement now has more than 1,600 members from representatives of different productive segments. The work still has the validation of renowned international observers, such as UNEP (United Nations Environment Program).

“The São Paulo Environmental Agreement is a State program that should be perpetuated and expanded in the coming years, with a definitive contribution to the state climate agenda, with repercussions in Brazil and in the world”, declared Patrícia Iglecias.

“The International Observers are very important and it is an honor to have Chile, a brother country, united in this work that contributes to the development of our program in the State of São Paulo”, he reinforced.

“For us, this is a very special initiative, because it is the first time that a Consulate is authorized by the Ministry of International Relations (of Chile) to adhere to a state government agreement. Our country has always adhered to policies of support, partnership and promotion of international instruments that protect the environment”, stated the Consul General of Chile.

“Just as São Paulo has implemented important programs, in Chile we also have an ambitious project to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and the decarbonization of the energy matrix by 2040, among other initiatives. Therefore, we are authorized to participate as Observers and we are happy to sign this partnership with you”, added Álvares.
