Parque Estadual Pariquera Abaixo


The road to arrive at Parque Estadual de Pariquera Abaixo (Pariquera Abaixo State Park) is Rodovia Régis Bittencourt (BR 116) up to Pariquera Açu, km 465. In the city, take Braço Preto (12 kilometers) up to Fazenda Lombadinha; then, take a right, ride one kilometer and arrive at the park's facilities. Legends, myths and a number of stories describe the magical features of the lowlands of Pariquera-Açu, in the south coast of the State of São Paulo. The flora and the fauna add beauty to the park's environmental richness. Bromélias, a typical flower found in this area, form "rugs" throughout the interior of the forest. The regular floods and the constantly flooded areas help preserve the diversity of the fauna. The park is home to several types of animals, among which capybaras, otters, pacas, spotted leopard-cats, monkeys, anteaters, in addition to many species of birds such as the solitary tinamous, toucans, gouaches, bell-birds, papagaios-de-cara-roxa, among many others. The park is part of Rede de Unidades de Conservação (Network of Preservation Units) managed by Secretaria do Meio Ambiente de São Paulo (State Department of the Environment), by means of Instituto Florestal (Forest Institute), and is home to remaining areas of the Atlantic Forest.
