Caves
Grottos and caves can be found in almost ten cities of the State of São Paulo. Mazes, cracks, streams with crystal-clear waters, stalactites and stalagmites and unique colors are there, ready to be admired by those who love nature.
One of the state's most famous caves is Caverna do Diabo. It is the largest cave in the state, located in the city of Eldorado, 248 kilometers far from the capital. Today, the explored portion extends over 8,262 meters, of which only 700 meters are open to visitors. This 700-meter stretch is artificially illuminated and has stairs, tracks and bridges that make visits more enjoyable. With its huge, harmonious and amazing mineral formation, it is one of the most beautiful caves in Brazil.
The city that concentrates the largest number of caves in Brazil is Iporanga. Casa da Pedra has the world's highest entrance: it is 215 meter high. The most visited city in the state is Santana, thanks to its stalactites (formations that hang down from the roof of the cave, formed by the dropping of water during millions of years) and stalagmites (formations that sticks up from the floor of the cave, formed by the same process as that of stalactites). Visits are allowed only with environmental guides, and the use of helmets and lighting equipment is compulsory.
