Viaduto do Chá

Filipe Araujo

The first viaduct built in São Paulo, it was named Viaduto do Chá (Tea Viaduct) because it was near a large tea crop. Built with metal structure brought from Germany, a great party was held in its opening, in 1892. It links Rua Direita (old downtown) with Rua do Chá, now Rua Barão de Itapetininga (new downtown).

In 1938, the former viaduct made of wooden ground was demolished, and a new one, made of concrete floor was built, twice wider. For many years, Viaduto do Chá has been the city's main postcard.
