Parque Ecológico do Tietê
Parque Ecológico do Tietê - Núcleo Engenheiro Goulart, opened in 1982, is in the Western region of the city, where approximately 4.5 million inhabitants live.
The park stretches over an area of 14 million square meters that goes from Barragem da Penha and São Miguel Paulista to the municipality of Guarulhos. It works as a basin of Rio Tietê, what avoids floods in Marginal (São Paulo's urban highway).
Considered one of the most important environmental reserves in the state, aside from preserving Várzea do Rio Tietê, the park is also an educational and cultural laboratory about the environment.
The park is home to Centro de Educação Ambiental (Environmental Education Center), Museu do Tietê (Tietê Museum), and Centro de Recepção de Animais Silvestres - CRAS (Center for Wild Animals), where there are approximately 2,000 animals (caught by Ibama, by the Forest Police, and donated by the population).
In 2004, the state government started carrying out works to revitalize Parque Ecológico do Tietê. At the program's launch, 500 trees were planted and Bosque da Diversidade was opened.
The recovery program expects to build indoor courts and renovate facilities and equipment, including the pool, sports court, Centro de Recuperação de Animais Silvestres (CRAS), now called Orlando Villas Boas.
