Parque Ecológico do Guarapiranga

Secretaria do Meio Ambiente do Estado - SMA (State Department of the Environment) opened, in April 1999, Parque Ecológico do Guarapiranga with a view to both preserving and protecting the fauna and flora found nearby the Guarapiranga dam and providing visitors with cultural, environmental and recreational activities, mainly for those who live near the dam. With its 250,30 hectares, the park stretches over 7% of the 28 kilometers occupied by Represa do Guarapiranga, representing a protection against invasions and illegal occupations.

The park has been designed to have the minimum possible impact on the environment. The 500-meter footbridge that takes to the park's main buildings is throughout suspended to avoid impact on the soil, windows are big to take advantage of the sunlight and curtains are made of recycled paper.

Speaking of which, a course on recycled paper is one among the many free workshops offered on a weekly basis. In one of these workshops, students are taught how to transform recycled material, using from cardboard to soda's bottles, into craftwork, such as vases with artificial plants, photo frames etc.

From Infocentro to Brinquedoteca, from Museu do Lixo to Programa de Educação Ambiental (Environmental Educational Program) and from Anfiteatro to Salão Oval, Parque Ecológico do Guarapiranga provides visitors with a number of activities in a landscape of native plants from the Atlantic Forest.
