Jardim Botânico

Daniel Guimarães

Jardim Botânico was created thanks to the passion of the naturalist Frederico Carlos Hoehne, in 1928, when he built Orquidário do Estado (State Orchid Yard), in Água Funda. Today, this 143-hectare park is home to a number of plants. The great mark of Jardim Botânico is its two greenhouses: one with typical plants from the Atlantic Forest and the other one for exhibitions. Instituto de Botânica (Botanic Institute) has a library with approximately 6,400 books, many works from the last century and a unique botanical collection. At Museu Botânico (Botanical Museum), it is possible to find several samples of plants from the Brazilian fauna, a collection of products extracted from plants, fibers, oils, woods, seeds, apart from pictures and photos showing the state's several ecosystems. In the architectural-cultural complex of Jardim Botânico, aside from the Museum, there is Jardim de Lineu (Lineu Garden), inspired by the Jardim Botânico of Uppsala, in Sweden, the historical greenhouses, the 1984 historical gate, and the land of the springs of the Ipiranga stream.
