The monument, designed by the architect Agostinho Vidal da Rocha, has a bronze sculpture that was created by Luiz Morrone in honor of Brazil's discoverer, Pedro Álvares Cabral. Opened on June 10th, 1988, it represented the beginning of the parties to celebrate 500 years of Brazil's discovery.
