German

The first German immigrants started arriving in Brazil shortly after the independence. For more than 100 years, the country received more than 250,000 Germans.

Compared to the Italians and to the Japanese, the number of Germans who came to São Paulo was insignificant. The flow of these people increased considerably only in the 30's, due to Nazism.

In São Paulo, the Germans, most of them Jews, came and settled in specific suburbs, such as Bom Retiro and Santo Amaro, to work primarily in the commercial and industrial fields.
