Museu de Arte Sacra

Mosteiro da Luz (Monastery of Luz) was built and founded by Frei Antônio de Sant'Anna Galvão in 1774 and it is São Paulo's most important representation of the 18th century colonial architecture. Managed by Iphan - Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Institute of the National Historic and Artistic Heritage) and by Condephaat - Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Artístico e Arquitetônico do Estado de São Paulo (Protection Council of the Artistic and Architecture Heritage of the State of São Paulo) since 1943, Mosteiro da Luz was considered, in 1979, a monument of national interest and preservation. The building is home to the nuns known as Irmãs Concepcionistas, who live in confinement and dedicate their time to pray and work. Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo (Sacred Art Museum) has one of the most important Brazilian sacred art collections: 4,000 pieces, 800 of which coming from the state's and the country's main churches and chapels.
