Arquivo do Estado

Arquivo do Estado
Eliana Rodrigues

The older files of Arquivo do Estado (State's File) date from September 16, 1721, when Gervásio Leite Rabelo, secretary of the former Capitania de São Paulo (Captaincy of São Paulo), started compiling governmental documents, giving rise to today's collection. Up to 1891, the documents were used only internally. During Mário Covas Government, Arquivo do Estado was kept in a 70 year old building with leaks, fissures and problems in the electrical wiring, at Rua Antônia de Queirós. The current government invested in new facilities (at Rua Voluntários da Pátria), equipped the institution, and today, Arquivo do Estado is finally stored in a proper place and managed by skilled employees who do more than 30,000 inquiries per year and work in association with local and foreign institutions, in partnership with universities and with other entities, developing comprehensive programs comprising technical publications in addition to several other projects designed to keep and preserve the collection. Fifteen years after its opening, the government started implementing Sistema de Arquivos do Estado de São Paulo - SAESP (File System of the State of São Paulo). Today, Acervo do Estado is considered by experts one of the most important and dynamic institutions of historic files in Latin America.
