Museu do Futebol

The museum displays to its visitors how soccer, an English sport played by white and high class people, has little by little changed and become a Brazilian popular sport played by different types of people, which is also a characteristic of the Brazilian culture.

Based on three aspects – emotion, history, and entertainment, the museum shows the history of soccer. It reveals, for example, the relation between soccer and art, the impact of soccer on people’s lives, the history of World Cups, aside from interacting with the audience. Visitors have access to a sequence of visual and audio experiences that show the relation between soccer and the Brazilian life in the 20th century. On the total, the video presentation lasts six hours.

The museum occupies an area of 6,900 square meters, in the so-called “inside out” of the bleachers, that is, the indoor space below the bleachers, in the main entrance of Estádio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho (Paulo Machado de Carvalho Municipal Stadium), which is Pacaembu’s official name.

Museu do Futebol has an Educational-Cultural Action center aimed at promoting visits, debates, lectures, didactic and playful programs and materials that propitiate a mediation between visitors and the contents presented in the exhibitions.

Budgeted at R$ 32.5 million, the museum is an initiative of the State Government and São Paulo Municipal Government in partnership with Roberto Marinho Foundation, which was responsible for raising funds with the private initiative through Rouanet Law. It is managed by a Social Organization created exclusively with the objective of managing the museum, linked to the State Department of Culture.
